Whether the professional is performing surgery or providing care to a sick child, the medical team is obligated to work together in order to efficiently accomplish common goals. However, when individuals are brought together as a team, differences in opinions, interests, knowledge, backgrounds, or beliefs may be cause for conflict. The term conflict is defined as, â€Å"an expressed struggle between at least two interdependent parties who perceive incompatible goals, scare resources, and interference from others while in attempt to achieve their own goals.† Conflict is not always dysfunctional, often it is necessary to maintain relationships and may stimulate the creation of new norms and procedures (Dana, 2011). On average, conflict arises between one to five times per week, which accounts for an additional ninety minutes of non-work related energy spent on conflict resolution (Pavlakis, Kaitelidou, Theodor ou, Galanis, Soutzi, Siskou, 2011). Conflict is natural and unavoidable in human interactions. It may possess both negative and positive characteristics in its ability to hinder task performance by creating hostility, as well as enhancing decision making, creativity, and innovation among team members.
